Roughly 3 percent of the US population are undiagnosed diabetics, that’s about ten million people. Life expectancy for a poorly controlled diabetic is estimated to be 15 years less than normal life expectancy.
So, discover the diabetes as early as possible, and you’ll have less to fix.
Are there symptoms to tip you off as to whether you should be checked out for unrecognized diabetes? Yes, but the tip off symptoms occur late in the game I’m afraid.
Here’s the rub, there are no known symptoms to pre-diabetes and few to no symptoms in early diabetes. A fairly large number of early diabetics report no symptoms at all.
Beginning symptoms of diabetes, when they do appear, are often explained away as occurring from other causes. Excessively urinating for example could be from a bladder inflammation that hangs on, or from nervously over drinking fluids, or from getting up there in years.
You can see how easy it would be to miss the early symptoms of diabetes if they came on gradually and you were busy with other things.
There are 3 high risk groups when it comes to unrecognized diabetes. Hispanics fall into the first group. The second large group is those, and in particular men, over the age of 60. The third is the largest group, the obese group – obviously the greater the fat the greater the risk.
Diabetic symptoms, when they do begin, are: unusual tiredness or drowsiness, excessive thirst, excessive hunger, frequent urination. slow healing sores or bruises, dry, itchy skin, unexplained weight loss, blurry vision, tingling or numbness in the hands or feet, frequent yeast infections on the skin or gums, or in the bladder or vagina
The most accurate screening test is the HbA1c test, but a simple fasting blood sugar is good too. Point of care instruments are too inaccurate for an official diagnoses of pre-diabetic or diabetic. A caregiver can refer you to a licensed laboratory, but the final diagnosis must be delivered by a professional.
